Roger and anne were at the beach, relaxing as they had a long week at the office whilst their dog and their daughter athena were playing along the waves.
The sound of the waves gave Roger And Anne tremendous amounts of peace as all they heard in the city were horns and people shouting all the time, it was nice for them to get away from everything for a while.
They were very happy and loved athena with everything they had and both of them were very hungry for more success in life.
Roger was an aspiring director having made 2 movies with indie budget and both of them not performing very well he had doubts and ultimately changed his job to become a Accountant. Anne could see that roger was not very happy with this change but was scared to point this out as she did not want to offend him or question his choices as she respected him a lot as roger did anne as well.
Anne was a violinist, who was regarded in the industry as one of the greatest emerging talents, all she was missing in her art was the feeling of misery.
"So how is cassandra doing?" Asked roger
"As okay as anyone can be after losing a custody battle I guess, she pretends that she wanted to be independent and free of any responsibility anyways but how can a mother sleep at night without seeing their child tucked in the bed?" Said Anne
"Anyways, you think of casting any new actors in that play that you wrote, it was amazing the last time you showed me the script" asked anne with a quirky smile.
"It's not for me this act anymore i guess, its childplay, I mean you think as a child everything you write you dream of directing will be read by everyone and you don't want the applause but you want the attention in some way, But I need to grow up maybe it's not in me to be a director i guess and that means i get to spend more time with you and athena anyways." Responded roger with a huge sigh at the end.
"After all these years, you still think I'd fall for that answer roger?
'Grow up?' Is that what you really think is the thing you need to do?
The way I've seen you smile while...."
"Can we just relax for now anne please?" Roger Interrupted anne with kindness in his tone.
Anne knew he had a rough week as his company was pushing a lot of deadlines on him and this was a much needed break for them.
She took out 2 cans of beers and put her head on this shoulder, just like on their first date when they were at the zimmer's concert.
All their friends went to the concert but both of them sneaked away into a quite abandoned home and went on the roof and gazed upon the stars while anne would put her head on his shoulder and time would stop for both of them. They would talk about the stars, the moon, and impending doom of the world.
Both of them scared of a commitment at the time would disregard their love for each other for a while but ultimately break down and accept that the other was ultimately the one for them.
They talked the whole night, he told her that he believed in the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics and she believed in the many worlds interpretation, for some this would be the ending point but for them it built their love even more.
At their one year anniversary, she took him to his childhood home and on her birthday he took her to the best spot to eat nachos.
While they were talking on the beach, Anne's phone rang it was a call from work and they had to leave and cut their trip short.
While on their way back no one spoke a word, not the usual silence but a tension in the air.
"Put on some mahler" said Roger
"Can we listen to brahms for sometime?" Replied Anne
"Sure"
"Had fun athena? Its been a while since we've been on a trip hasn't it?" Asked roger to make the mood a bit calmer
"Well, if you had time we would go every other week" Interrupted anne
"Excuse me? If i had time? I only fucking see you once a week anyway anne, we both are busy and that is what we have to manage and i get that" answered roger with frustration in his voice.
"Don't swear in front of the child roger"
"Please do not tell me what to do"
"Oh whatever i can't wait till we get home and away from this nonsense".
As they were driving athena collapsed on the seat and stopped breathing, on arriving to the hospital the doctors told that she had a tumor in her brain from a long time which was unnoticed and lead ultimately to her death.
For roger and anne the 'beep' sound of the machine in the hospital would never stop, it was the sound that would ultimately terrify them for the rest of their lives, and nothing could ever stop this. Anne and roger could not even make eye contact with each other perhaps because it reminded them of what they had or perhaps feeling guilty for the pain the other had sustained.
They would have endless fights, both saying things that they never imagined saying to the other but meaning every word of it now and knowing fully that they will regret it however true it may seem.
"Why won't you just direct the movie, fucking hell roger?"
"Do not tell me what to do, do i ever tell you to?" Replied roger shouting at the top of his lungs.
"But just tell me why roger?" Asked anne.
"I don't know why, are you happy with that? I do not know and that is what i live through every day not knowing why and athena would tell me every day that i was her favorite director" replied roger.
"I am sorry i cannot do this anymore anne, even in my dreams now we do not go to drink tea and sit at the rooftop anymore, even in my dreams we fight."
Anne replied "I do not know you anymore roger".
"Neither do i".
Years later:
Anne would go on to be the greatest violinist with great pain in her performance
Although whenever she would bow down to the audience all she would hear amongst those cheers was the beep sound from the hospital
Roger now an integral part of the "Athena's production" had made 5 hits back to back and was regarded as the best director of his time.
